Swiss ski slopes saw 6.9% more guests than last year

As the ski season comes to a close, Swiss cable car operators say it was a better winter than last year – but point out how poor some previous years were.

The start of the current season brought lots of snow and 36.4% more guests, announced the Swiss Cable Car AssociationExternal link on Tuesday. But by Easter Saturday (March 31) the boom in business had dwindled, bringing the figure down to 6.9% more guests for the season overall.

The reason was the weather. Heavy storms in January forced the temporary shutdown of many facilities. A lack of sunshine this winter was also a factor.

Still, compared with the average for the past five years, Swiss cable car operators welcomed 1.3% more passengers this past ski season.

“This is a bright spot for the industry. However, because the previous winter seasons were exceptionally weak, this year’s increase should not be overrated,” wrote the association on its homepage.

The numbers are not quite final. Several Swiss ski resorts are still open, and the slopes are still in good condition.
