Flocking to the top

Keeping the tradition of alpine shepherding alive.

Every year since 1957, a shepherding festival has been held high on the Gemmi pass between the Swiss cantons of Bern and Valais. Hundreds of sheep are herded up to the shores of Lake Dauben, 2,202 metres above sea level, where the festivities take place.

It’s a time for shepherds, farmers, locals and even tourists to get together. Sheep feast on Gläck – a mixture of bran cereal and salt – while visitors enjoy regional dishes, listen to alphorn music and take part in a Swiss sing-along.
