Anthology of Chagall art in Lugano

A specially decorated bus will bring the memory of the artist and his works to the streets of Lugano Keystone

A new exhibition showcasing the works of Marc Chagall opens at the Museum of Modern Art in Lugano on March 8 (and runs to July 1). The organisers say it may be the largest-ever exhibition of the Russian artist's paintings.

The exhibition is laid out in chronological order, from Chagall’s early years in Russia (1908-1910) to his final French period (1960-1980), so as to provide an understanding of how Chagall’s art developed, as well as to give an insight into his world and influences.

Russian museums have loaned the exhibition early masterpieces such as “The Walk” and “Jew in Bright Red” as well as works which have rarely been seen in public, such as “The White Horse”.

The famous triptych, “Resistance – Resurrection – Liberation”, is part of a major contribution made by French museums and galleries.

Altogether, the Lugano exhibition boasts 80 paintings on canvas and about 40 original works on paper.

The Chagall exhibition follows major shows in Lugano, which featured Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Amedeo Modigliani and Edvard Munch.

Those wishing to travel to Lugano by train to see the exhibition can buy a combined rail-museum ticket giving them a 20 per cent reduction on entry. Once in Lugano, some hotels and restaurants are offering 10 per cent discounts to ticket holders.
