Culture Basel’s Fasnacht Previous Next At four o'clock on Monday morning Basel's annual carnival - the biggest in Switzerland - kicked off with the traditional Morgestraich or early morning procession. To the sound of drums and piccolos groups of masked revellers marched through the old town, as huge lanterns illustrated with colourful images lightened the darkness.
