Jean-François Bergier, the historian who chaired the expert commission which investigated Switzerland's role in the Second World War, has died.

News of his death on Thursday morning was announced on French-language Swiss public radio.

Bergier, a social and economic historian, was 77.

The independent commission of experts (ICE) was established in December 1996 in response to the scandal involving dormant accounts, belonging to victims of the Nazi holocaust, placed in Switzerland in the run up to the war.

The ICE’s mandate was to investigate the volume and fate of assets moved to Switzerland before, during and immediately after the war.

It published its final report in 2002.
