Brahms Symphonies. Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. David Zinman, dir

swissinfo.ch

Late Romantic. Johannes Brahms had a special relationship with Switzerland and his appearance in 1874 at the Zurich music festival as featured conductor and composer in particular became a major triumph. During his frequent subsequent stays in Swiss climes, Brahms composed numerous inspired works and incidentally became friends with many local cultural eminences. Not surprisingly, this last giant of romantic music was guest of honor at the inaugeration of the Tonhalle Zurich in 1895 with its ceiling fresco displaying him among other classical immortals. These days the splendid David Zinman and the renowned Tonhalle Orchestra have released for the first time the complete Brahms symphonies recorded live at their homestead. And again this dream team infatuates the listener with a light, transparent rendition which avoids romantic gravity.

Allegro energico e passionato. Più allegro (4th Symphony)
