Ganz, 70, got his breakthrough in a major part in the 1976 film Sommergäste (Summer guests), launching a widely acclaimed career in both Europe and the United States.
The Zurich-born actor has worked with directors Werner Herzog, Éric Rohmer and Francis Ford Coppola among others, but he is probably best known for his role in Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire, as the angel Damiel, and for playing Hitler in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s The Downfall in 2004.
Ganz recently appeared in The Reader and The Baader Meinhof Complex, both nominated for Oscars in 2009. He received a European Film Award for lifetime achievement in December.
On Thursday he was present at the Piazza Grande in Locarno to see the world premiere of Sport de Filles (Of Women and Horses) directed by Patricia Mazuy and set in the world of competitive horse training.
