Dutoit prepares to step down as French orchestra chief
The Swiss conductor, Charles Dutoit, has begun his final season with the French National Orchestra, which he has led since 1991.
In the first of about 40 concerts in Paris and on tour, he conducted a performance of the opera oratorio “Oedipus Rex” by Stravinsky, with Laurent Terzieff as soloist.
Also on the programme – at the Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris – was the French première of a concerto for violin and orchestra by the American composer, Richard Danielpour. The soloist for that piece was the Quebec soprano, Chantal Juillet.
Lausanne-born Dutoit, who is 63, toured extensively with the French orchestra, which this year has performed in China and Vietnam. He is also the musical director of Montreal’s symphony orchestra.
His successor in Paris, the German conductor Kurt Masur, takes over in September next year.
