Gustav Mahler's most personal work, the unfinished Tenth Symphony, can only be performed with sometimes more, sometimes less satisfying attempts at reconstruction. David Zinman describes this symphony as the "saddest chapter" in Mahler's great, ten-part symphonic novel, in which he bids his wife Alma farewell, speaks of his disillusionment with life, and looks to the future of music.
