Heinrich Sutermeister was born in 1910 in Feuerthalen, Canton Zurich. He first studied philology in Basle and Paris before changing to study music in 1931, at which he moved to Munich. He established close contact with Carl Orff and Werner Egk. After returning to Switzerland, Sutermeister worked as a répétiteur at the Berne City Theatre. It was while working there that he wrote his first opera in 1936 "The Black Spider".
Shortly after its highly successfull world premiere on April 1940 in Dresden, the Opera "Romeo an Juliet" embarked on an unprecedent, triumphal procession across Europe. As was often his custom, Sutermeister wrote his own libretto for "Romeo and Juliet".
