Lights to burn all night during Zurich festival

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to descend on Zurich for its three-day non-stop festival, "Züri Fäscht". Held only every three years, the 2001 edition boasts giant firework displays, daring acrobats and countless musical performances.

The organisers of this year’s “Züri Fäscht” (July 6 – 8) say the wide variety of entertainment will be provided on “water, land and in the air”.

The entertainment ranges from high wire acts, ski and snowboard acrobatics, to live music and dance. More than 50 stages are being set up across the old town and around the shores of Lake Zurich.

Premiering at the festival will be a show called the “Flying Elektra”. High over the Limmat River, two acrobats suspended from hot air balloons will display their daring skills on the trapeze.

The highlight is expected to be two giant firework displays on the Friday and Saturday evenings. The half-hour show on Friday will be accompanied by pop music. The choreographers have chosen classical pieces for the Saturday performance.

For the first time, the organisers have convinced the authorities to allow the festival to continue non-stop through the night. Local public transport will also run round the clock to meet the need, and the Swiss Federal Railways are putting additional trains in service on the Zurich line. They will also operate later than usual.
