There have been 36 sales devoted to Swiss artists over the years. Several major galleries, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and New York’s Metropolitan Museum, exhibit the works sold at auction, such as Ferdinand Hodler’s Der Traum des Hirten.
Christie’s said that in recent decades shows on Swiss artists such as Fischli/Weiss at the Guggenheim and Hodler at the Neue Galerie in New York had “ignited the interest of international collectors”. Swiss art has been sold to collectors around the world, from the Pushkin Museum in Moscow to a private collection in Texas.
Christie’s Zurich has offered some 6,200 Swiss art works in the last 25 years. Here is a look at a few sold over the years and those in the May 30 auction. This latest auction includes Giovanni Giacometti, Fèlix Vallotton and examples of the Dada alternative art movement.
