Swiss composer, Paul Huber, dies
The Swiss composer, Paul Huber, has died in hospital at the age of 83 in his home canton of St Gallen, his family said. The musician composed more than 400 works, including a concerto for the Alps Choir.
Huber was born in 1918 in the eastern Swiss town of Kirchberg. After studying at a Zurich conservatory, he travelled to Paris where he continued his musical training.
Huber returned to Switzerland to become a professor of singing and piano at the Canton of St Gallen school.
Huber was influenced by the Austrian composer, Anton Bruckner, who died in 1896. Huber composed a number of masses and chamber operas as well as a symphony entitled “De nostrae aetatis angoribus”.
St Gallen awarded him the Foundation’s Prize for Culture in 1998, in honour of his musical creativity.
“My major works,” Huber once said, “are those which assume the most importance to me and which are a source of religious and spiritual inspiration.”
