More than half of all Swiss people do not go to museums, according to a new survey. Of those who do, it says, very few pay more than four visits a year.

More than half of all Swiss people do not go to museums, according to a new survey. Of those who do, it says, very few pay more than four visits a year.

The study was carried out by the Lucerne Polytechnic, and was based on a poll carried out by the Link Institute in June 1999.

It found that 55 per cent of those asked never went into a museum, while 36 per cent would go only up to three times a year. A mere seven per cent said they would go to a museum more than four times in a single year.

The survey also questioned people who hold the Swiss Museum Pass. Nearly 60 per cent of this group said they would go to a museum more than seven times a year.

The questioners found that 80 per cent of pass holders were aged 40 and above, and the majority were women.

According to the federal statistical office, 8.5 million people pass through the doors of the country’s 850 museums each year.
