Buddha and the alphorn

A slice of Thai culture and tradition in Swiss suburbia.

The Wat Srinagarindravararam is the biggest centre of its kind in Europe. It is home to a group of Buddhist monks who offer language and meditation courses together with volunteers. The centre, which is sponsored by the mother of the Thai King, includes a lavishly ornamented temple. Set in an industrial estate in Gretzenbach, 50km west of Zurich, the site attracts thousands of visitors mainly Thai expatriates in Europe as well as Swiss.
