Adelboden race cancelled by fog
The World Cup men's giant slalom race at Adelboden in Switzerland has been abandoned because of thick fog after 59 of 66 scheduled racers completed the first run.
The International Ski Federation called off the race Saturday after deciding the course would not be safe for the final seven skiers.
World Cup rules state the entire field must complete the first run before a second leg can be rescheduled.
Italy’s Davide Simoncelli led after racing a shortened course at the resort in the Bernese Oberland in 56.08 seconds, 0.27 seconds faster than Marcel Hirscher of Austria. Croatia’s Ivica Kostelic was third, 0.55 seconds behind Simoncelli.
The best Swiss was Carlo Janka in seventh. Teammate Didier Cuche lost his balance and crashed out halfway down but was not injured.
The start had already been brought down the hill and delayed for 80 minutes by poor visibility. Despite the bad weather, the race had attracted a record 32,000 crowd.
A World Cup slalom race is scheduled for Sunday.
