Baby joy for McMahon

Eight months after winning gold, McMahon is celebrating once more Keystone Archive

Swiss triathlete Brigitte McMahon has given birth to her second child, just eight months after winning Switzerland's only gold medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney.

Jennifer McMahon was born in canton Zug on Wednesday, weighing in at 3.2 kilogrammes.

“The births of Jennifer and Dominic have been the most moving and beautiful moments of my life,” said a delighted Brigitte McMahon, “even ahead of the gold medal in Sydney.”

The Swiss ‘sports star of the year’ has been keeping fit throughout her pregnancy on a reduced training programme, but her American husband and trainer, Mike, now plans to slow her down for a little while following the birth.

“She is certainly going to have to rest for at least a week,” he insisted, “even if Brigitte herself wants to get back to training sooner.”

McMahon is hoping to make a return to competition by July at the earliest. Her biggest short-term goal, though, is to be back in action for October when the World Cup circuit stops off in the city of her greatest triumph, Sydney.
