Beat Feuz wins World Cup downhill in Norway

Swiss outsider Beat Feuz earned a surprising World Cup downhill win in Norway on Friday, coming in 0.05 seconds ahead of Canadian world champion Erik Guay.

Feuz, 39th in the overall standings, completed the 3-kilometre Olympiabakken course in Kvitfjell in 1 minute, 47.39 seconds.

It was Feuz’s first ever World Cup race win. His previous best place had been seventh.

Michael Walchhofer of Austria was 0.10 seconds back in third.

The Swiss pre-race favourite, Didier Cuche, finished 0.24 seconds behind in fifth place.

Cuche now leads Walchhofer by 50 points in the ranking for this season’s downhill World Cup. Both men are hoping to win the cup for the fourth time.

Friday’s downhill was a replacement event for a race at Beaver Creek, Colorado, in December that was cancelled due to strong winds and fog.

A second downhill will be held on Saturday, followed by a super-G on Sunday.
