The position of the Swiss fort, at 1,540 metres above sea level on the southern side of the Gotthard pass, allows for keeping watch over the Val Formazza, in Italy. The building was completed in 1942 and subsequently extended. It can shelter around 50 men. (Photos: Carlo Pisani, swissinfo.ch)
