Extra-time hockey upset thrills Fribourg fans
Ice hockey team HC Fribourg-Gottéron have advanced in the Swiss ice hockey league championships with a win over touted rival SC Bern.
Fans in the western Swiss city cheered as 42-year-old former Bern player Gil Montandon scored in the sixth minute of extra time, leading his team to the 4-3 win and a place in the semifinals.
National media described Tuesday’s scene inside the sold-out 7,115-seat arena as “pandemonium”.
SC Bern had managed to win only two games in the best-of-seven series.
The loss is Bern’s second playoff disappointment in as many years – in the 2005-6 season, they were ousted by the Kloten Flyers.
