Federer moves to quarter finals in Rogers Cup

Switzerland's Roger Federer heads to the quarter finals on Friday in Montreal's Rogers Cup tennis tournament, having defeated countryman Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 7-6.

The world’s number one player, Federer, dominated Wawrinka, ranked 18th, who said he had failed to capitalise on crucial points. “I dropped the break too fast,” Wawrinka said.

“I played much better against Stan than the first time,” Federer said. Wawrinka beat Federer in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters tournament in April.

The remaining players in the tournament are the best eight in the world. That is the first time since 1973 that such a lineup has occurred. They are competing for $3 million (SFr3.22 million) in prize money.

Federer plays Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, ranked seventh, on Friday evening Swiss time. Rafael Nadal, the world’s number two player and Federer’s longtime rival, faces Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, ranked fifth.
