Hingis loses third successive match to Williams

Swiss player Martina Hingis was not able to get past Serena Williams in Los Angeles Keystone

Serena Williams knocked Switzerland's world number one tennis player, Martina Hingis, out of the Los Angeles Open on Saturday in the semi-finals. It was the third time in a row Hingis succumbed to the hard-hitting American.

Serena Williams turned on the pressure in the second set and rallied past Hingis 4-6 6-2 6-3. She now faces the world number two seed, Lindsay Davenport, in the finals.

Hingis had already lost to Williams in the semi-finals of the 1999 Los Angeles Open and last year’s US Open final.

After the match, Hingis admitted to using the wrong kind of strategy in the second set. She retreated to her typical behind-the-baseline mode of attack.

“I couldn’t pull the strategy through the whole match because I got tired,” Hingis said. She made 21 of her 23 unforced errors in the last two sets.
