Skier Zurbriggen second in World Cup combined

Swiss alpine skier Silvan Zurbriggen has finished second in the World Cup combined at Kitzbühel.

Zurbriggen, of canton Valais, came behind Croatia’s Ivica Kostelić and ahead of Benjamin Raich of Austria.

The Swiss managed the result despite placing 17th in the slalom on Sunday – his worst slalom finish of the season. Zurbriggen’s combined times over two runs was one minute, 40.40 seconds (50.77 seconds, 49.44 seconds).

His overall time for both the downhill, in which he also placed 17th, and slalom races was 3:35.86 (1:55.46, 1:40.40).

Kostelić, who last week criticised World Cup organisers for skewing the alpine skiing circuit in favour of speed racers at the expense of slalom specialists, finished with a combined time of 3:33.64 (1:54.71, 1:38.93).
