Snowboard gold and curling silver in Turin

Switzerland has won its fifth gold and fourth silver medal at the Winter Olympics in Turin in a women's snowboarding event and women's curling.

The 24-year-old top favourite, Daniela Meuli, won gold in snowboard’s parallel giant slalom and the curling team lost a nail-biting final, 7-6 to Sweden.

Meuli won the final easily by beating the 18-year-old German newcomer, Amelie Kober, who fell shortly after the start of the race.

The defending world champion, Meuli went into the final run with a 0.21 second lead.

Bronze was won by the American, Rosey Fletscher, and Switzerland’s Ursula Bruhin finished seventh.

Of Switzerland’s five gold medals, three have come in snowboarding events.

Tanja Frieden took first place in women’s Boardercross, and Philipp Schoch captured the men’s title in the parallel giant slalom on Wednesday. His brother Simon took silver.

Curling

Even though they were up against a powerful Swedish side, the Swiss women went into the curling final on Thursday with high expectations after defeating Canada 7-5 in the semi-final.

Down 6-4 in the tenth and final end, the Swiss displayed strong nerves by grabbing two points to force an extra end.

Even though Sweden had the advantage of last rock in the 11th, Swiss skip, Mirjam Ott, forced her Swedish counterpart to make a double takeout for the victory.

Sweden has won the European curling title the past five years, and is defending world champion.

With the silver medal, Ott became the only women curler in the world with two Olympic medals. She was part of Switzerland’s silver medal team in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Canada won bronze by defeating Norway 11-5.
