Swiss footballers slip 2-1 past Greece

Switzerland have defeated Greece by a 2-1 margin in qualification play for the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa.

Swiss striker Alex Frei scored the game’s first goal when he slipped a penalty kick into the left side of the Greek net in the 42nd minute.

The opportunity came after Greek defender Giourkas Seitaridis blocked a Swiss shot on goal with his arm.

Greece evened the score in the 68th minute but forward Blaise Nkufo put Switzerland ahead nine minutes later.

The Swiss have so far drawn their match with Israel, lost to Luxembourg and stayed alive with a win against Latvia in Group 2 play.

Wednesday’s win in Athens keeps them in the race for a spot in South Africa.
