Swiss oppose death penalty for minors in Iran

The foreign ministry has asked the Iranian authorities to repeal a death sentence set to be carried out on Wednesday.

The man scheduled for capital punishment was found guilty of murder in connection with a robbery in 2004. He was 15 at the time.

His execution has been postponed several times over the past few years, the foreign ministry said in a statement. The young man has since withdrawn his confession; the exact circumstances of the crime are unclear.

Switzerland lodged an appeal through its Teheran embassy and through its special envoy for human rights in Bern.

The death penalty – in particular against juvenile offenders – has been a priority topic in human rights talks between the Swiss and Iranian governments.
