Zug leapfrog Davos to go top
After a hard-fought 4-3 victory over champions Zurich Lions, Zug head the table of ice hockey's top division. But the Lions, playing away, did all they could to win the game.
Zug scored two in the first period, leaving Zurich trailing. Neither side managed to find the net in the second.
But in a knife-edge third period, Zurich scored three times, with Zug replying twice. Defeat leaves the Lions third in the table.
Having been queue-jumped by Zug, previous leader Davos are now second. They drew 2-2 against Fribourg.
A goalless first period was followed by a second that saw Davos make two goals to Fribourg’s one. But Fribourg levelled the score in the third.
Meanwhile, La Chaux-de-Fonds have managed their first victory of the season, 4-2 at home to Chur. Chur scored once in the first period, but the hosts managed two in the second.
They clinched the game in the third, scoring two goals while Chur managed one. Chur are now bottom of the playout zone, while La Chaux-de-Fonds are pulling themselves free.
Also down in the table, there was some joy for last season’s runners-up, Lugano, who have made a bad start this time around. They are no longer bottom, having beaten Kloten 2-1.
All the goals were made in the second period, sandwiched between a goalless first and third.
In the night’s two other games, Ambri went down 4-0 to Rapperswil, and Langnau drew 1-1 with Berne.
