Bonnet: a luminary in space research
The new head of Switzerland's International Space Science Institute, Roger-Maurice Bonnet, has devoted his life to the study of space.
Born in 1937, Bonnet began to specialise in space research at the University of Paris, where he obtained his doctorate in 1968 for his study of ultraviolet radiation and solar imaging.
He then rapidly moved up the ranks within different research agencies and became director of the Scientific Programme of the European Space Agency in 1983.
He has also held directorships at the French National Centre for Scientific Research and at the Laboratory for Stellar and Planetary Physics at Verrières-le-Buisson, France.
Bonnet is the author of more than 100 scientific articles and 50 publications, articles and books aimed at the general public.
He is also Officer of the Légion d’Honneur, a member of the Royal Astronomical Society, the Academia Europaea and the International Academy of Astronautics.
