New visitor centre for National Park

Environment Minister Moritz Leuenberger has opened a modern new visitor centre at the Swiss National Park, near Zernez in the eastern part of the country.

The centre, which took six years to build and cost SFr14 million ($13.4 million), contains multimedia information on park practicalities, history, as well as flora and fauna.

Leuenberger said that the new building, designed by local architect Valerio Olgiati, was a good compromise between “modern architecture and the mountain landscape”.

He also praised the National Park as a mirror of society in which the Swiss could look “with pride and joy”.

The Swiss National Park was founded in 1914 as one of the first national parks in Europe. It has been the scene of sightings of several brown bears.
