
Public names Zurich elephant ‘Ruwani’
The female elephant born in Zurich Zoo on February 25 will be called Ruwani. The name received 8,263 votes in an online poll, Zurich Zoo revealed on Monday. The two other options, Rishu and Reshani, picked up 3,147 and 1,894 votes respectively. (Zurich Zoo, swissinfo.ch)

All three names have a connection with Sri Lanka, home of one of the calf’s grandmothers. Ruwani means “like a precious stone, highly valuable”. In a separate poll, almost two-thirds of swissinfo.ch readers went for Rishu.
