Swiss Solidarity saw donations double in 2017

Humanitarian foundation Swiss Solidarity released its 2017 reportExternal link on Wednesday, which showed that it received CHF38.1 million ($38.3 million) in donations last year — double the amount in 2016.

A total of CHF19 million was collected for famine in Africa. Some CHF6 million was raised for victims of the Bondo landslide, which hit canton Graubünden last August, causing some CHF41 million in damage.

In total, Swiss Solidarity spent CHF62 million last year on projects worldwide, and approved 161 new projects. A total of CHF50 million went to 143 projects abroad, while CHF5.8 million was spent on projects in Switzerland, including social assistance, youth in distress and weather-related aid.

Funding for international projects went to groups like Caritas (CHF10.7 million), Terre des hommes’ Helping Children worldwide programme (CHF8 million) the Swiss Red Cross (CHF 5.8 million), Medair (CHF 4.9 million) and Médecins sans Frontières (CHF 4.1 million).

Swiss Solidarity is the fundraising arm of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, the parent company of swissinfo.ch.
