Women stage ‘Pussyhat knit-in’ in Swiss capital
On International Women’s Day, several hundred people gathered in front of Switzerland's parliament square to show solidarity with international movements and some – including parliamentarians – knitted pink “Pussyhats”.
The participants called for social and economic security for women, fair wages and decent working conditions. They also demanded a better balance between family and work. Members of an alliance called “We can’t keep quietExternal link” were also present. The alliance is made up of women, migrant, and LGBT organisations, as well as trade unions.
The colour pink was in evidence everywhere with people wearing and knitting pink PussyhatsExternal link as a symbolic gesture of solidarity with international women’s movements. Women parliamentarians also joined in the knitting campaign.
The Pussyhats have become symbols of a global movement against sexism and discrimination.
The name of the hats were inspired by US President Donald Trump’s comments, recorded in 2005, when he said, “Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything.”
Millions of women wore the hats during a global protest called Women’s March for Dignity, held on January 21.
