Lights went out in parts of Zurich's city centre on Wednesday afternoon. The main railway station and certain districts were affected.

The power cuts hit parts of Kreis 5, as well as the districts of Wipkingen and Unterstrass. Rail traffic was not affected. However, according to the Swiss Federal Railways, some of the lighting at the city’s main station has ceased to operate.

The situation returned to normal early Wednesday evening a little after 6 pm. However, many commuters had to take buses instead of trams that were immobilised by the outage.

The cause of the failure was identified by Zurich’s main energy provider (ewz) as a damaged power cable. Swiss public television SRF earlier reported that there had been a fire at a substation.
