Swiss notch up train travel record
The Swiss travel further by train every year than anyone else: 2,307 kilometres per person, comfortably ahead of the runners-up in Japan, who travelled an average of 1,912km.
The Japanese were tops when it came to the number of train journeys made, however: 69, versus 53 for the Swiss, the Swiss information service for public transport, LITRA, reported on Tuesday.
Using statistics for 2013 released by the International Union of RailwaysExternal link (UIC), LITRA added that third place for journeys went to Luxembourg (40), followed by Denmark (35), Austria (28) and Germany (25).
The 26-country list was propped up by Romania and Lithuania, whose citizens made an average of two train journeys a year.
The French were third in terms of distance (1,301km), followed by Austria (1,280km), Denmark (1,190km) and Britain (1,063km). Last place went to Latvia (40km).
