Austria and Switzerland discuss Euro 2008 joint bid
Officials from the Austrian and Swiss football federations have held talks in Vienna on a possible joint bid to host the 2008 European championship finals.
Tuesday’s meeting between the head of the Swiss Football Federation, Marcel Mathier, and his Austrian counterpart, Beppo Mauhart, marked a second attempt by Austria at bidding jointly for the finals.
It made an unsuccessful stab at the 2004 European championship finals with another neighbour, Hungary. The event was eventually awarded to Portugal.
During the talks, Mathier reportedly informed Mauhart of the “positive developments” regarding Swiss projects to build new stadiums, and of the political and economic interest there is in Switzerland for the joint bid.
Mauhart, on the other hand, said his side was waiting for a financial guarantee from the government.
The two sets of officials agreed to meet again for further talks in the spring.
