In her opening speech to the 2010 Ambassadors Conference in the resort of Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland, Calmy-Rey said international cooperation was key.
This certainly did not mean a loss of independence or an abandonment of sovereignty, she stressed.
The Ambassadors Conference brings together around 200 representatives of Switzerland abroad, including ambassadors, consuls general and heads of the cooperation offices of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
Being discussed at the annual gathering are Switzerland’s European policy and the future of Switzerland as a financial centre, as well as disarmament – a priority of foreign policy and access to water.
The conference will end on August 27 with the traditional excursion with the Swiss President, a post held this year by Economics Minister Doris Leuthard. It will be in canton Obwalden.

This year the internet portal swissinfo.ch is marking its 75th anniversary. The Swiss shortwave service was set up in 1935 and was renamed Swiss Radio International (SRI) in 1978. Listeners from all over the world were very motivated to write in, as a look in our archive reveals. (Christoph Balsiger, swissinfo.ch)
