Ex Swiss army major general, Däniker, dies

Gustav Däniker wanted the Swiss army's priority to be the promotion of peace Keystone

The former major general of the Swiss army, Gustav Däniker, has died at the age of 72, after being hospitalised with internal haemorrhaging.

In 1988, Däniker was chief of staff for training operations at the then Military Department (now ministry of defence). Oswald Sigg, a spokesman for the ministry, confirmed he died on the night between Friday and Saturday.

Sigg said Däniker was “an eminent military personality, who was one of the precursors of the opening up of Switzerland’s security policies.” He said the ex major general was in favour of the Swiss army making the promotion of peace a priority.

After his retirement, Däniker used his expert’s knowledge in the drafting of a government report on “security through co-operation”.

As well as working as a consultant for the ministry of defence, he was the co-founder of a public relations agency.
