Glittering ceremony for revamped Bern station

The capital, Bern, is celebrating the opening of its renovated main station and plaza, complete with wave-like glass roof.

The around SFr100 million ($96 million) project is helping to ensure that the city presents itself in its best light ahead of the Euro 2008 football championships.

Switzerland and Austria are co-hosting the tournament, which starts on June 7.

The new station and square have been hailed by Bern mayor Alexander Tschäppät as a further landmark for the capital, after the award-winning makeover of the square in front of the parliament building in 2004.

Bern’s station is the second largest in Switzerland, with around 150,000 people making use of it each day.
