House of Representatives
The House of Representatives (also referred to as the National Council) is one of two parliamentary chambers. Its 200 members are elected directly by the people (in the cantons). The number of parliamentarians each canton sends to the House depends on the size of its population. The House and the Senate, which sit in the capital Bern, regularly meet for joint sessions. Parliament is also referred to as federal assembly.
