Swiss spend SFr26 billion on dining out

Employment and population growth has contributed to a 12 per cent increase in the amount of money spent in Swiss restaurants and bars.

People in Switzerland spent about SFr26 billion ($28.93 billion) on eating out and going for drinks in 2010. That is SFr3.3 billion more than in 2009, according to GastroSuisse, the national federation of hoteliers and restaurateurs.

In a statement published on Tuesday, GastroSuisse noted that the national smoking ban introduced in May 2010 had not had the negative impact feared by many in the industry.

The group said the figures also reflected improved service and lower prices offered by restaurants and bars.

Across Switzerland, beefsteak served with French fries and salad was the most-ordered dish in 2010. GastroSuisse also noted the increasing popularity of fast food.
