Modern times at the factory
In 1943, Swiss photographer Jakob Tuggener (1904-1988) published Fabrik - ein Bildepos der Technik depicting factories, workers and the world of industry in Switzerland during the late 1930s and early 1940's.
Tuggener was also a filmmaker and painter, but saw himself mainly as an artist. His favourite themes were factory work, country life and sparkling social events. He was particularly interested in photo books, designing over 60 even though he only published one. Although his work was praised by specialists, it was a commercial failure. The Steidl publishing house and the Swiss Photography Foundation have now re-issued Tuggener’s seminal work.
