Ogi wins Olympic medal
The outgoing Swiss president, Adolf Ogi, has been honoured with an Olympic gold medal. Not the kind won for on-the-field prowess, but for his contribution to the world of sport.
The Lausanne-based International Olympic Committee announced on Wednesday that it would award Ogi the gold medal of the Olympic Order.
Ogi is also Switzerland’s sports minister, but his interest is not purely political. He was head of the Swiss Ski Federation from 1975 to 1981, and also presided over Sion’s bid to host the 2006 Winter Olympics.
He is also a keen sportsman in his spare time.
The Olympic Order is awarded in recognition of the recipient’s outstanding role in promoting sport and the Olympic ideal.
